Dynamic Skeleton Based Wayfinding
نویسندگان
چکیده
A system is proposed in which case-based reasoning principles are applied to the wayfinding problem for computer games. As case-based reasoning is thought to mimic aspects of human thinking, applying this methodology can provide more convincing non-player character behaviour. Additionally, knowledge re-use could provide performance gains through a reduction in redundant computation. Agents store a skeleton set of known paths and adapt these to solve new wayfinding problems. New solutions, along with paths obtained through communication with other agents, are reincorporated to create a dynamic, evolving case-base of skeleton paths.

Skeleton-based Wayfinding for Computer Games
This is an extended version of a paper published in the ECAI conference (Guesgen and Shotbolt 2004). In this paper, a system is proposed in which case-based reasoning principles are applied to the wayfinding problem for computer games. As case-based reasoning is thought to mimic aspects of human thinking, applying this methodology may provide more convincing non-player character behaviour. Addi...
متن کاملWayfinding swarm creatures exploring the 3D dynamic virtual worlds
The use of 3D virtual worlds in the construction industry is not limited to simulation of building models. Whilst in a 3D virtual world, designers can view their work from various viewpoints by moving around. However explorations within these environments are not simple affairs due to the absence of many sensorial stimuli that exist in the physical world. Hence there needs to be a tool aiding d...
متن کاملTHE SKELETON IN THE COGNITIVE MAP A Computational and Empirical Exploration
Experts seem to find routes in complex environments by finding a connection from the source to a “skeleton” of major paths, then moving within the skeleton to the neighborhood of the destination, making a final connection to the destination. The authors present a computational hypothesis that describes the skeleton as emerging from the interaction of three factors: (a) The topological map is re...
متن کاملIndoor Wayfinding at Amsterdam Airport
Thousands of people pass through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in The Netherlands every day. Despite being one of the largest and busiest airports in the world, Schiphol strives to offer passengers a stress-free experience. Being unable to find your way around an airport is a common frustration for travellers the world over. In an endeavour to solve this problem, Schiphol has launched an update to...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Heuristic Approach for Wayfinding and Navigation in a Street Network as a Geographic Space
The purpose of this study is to explore human wayfinding behavior within a familiar street network in a purely qualitative manner. So, the most significant criteria of making decision in the network is the cognitive map which has been learnt before during the human beings daily activity. The cognitive map includes a great deal of details of environmental descriptions but it seems that preacquai...
